About

What is SushiSwap

SushiSwap launched in August 2020 as a "vampire fork" of Uniswap — it copied Uniswap's smart contract code (which was open-source) and added one crucial innovation: SUSHI governance tokens distributed to liquidity providers, incentivising them to migrate from Uniswap. This worked dramatically: within days, SushiSwap had attracted over $1 billion from Uniswap in what became known as the "vampire attack."

From those origins, SushiSwap evolved into an independent multichain DeFi protocol with unique features: xSUSHI (the first major protocol revenue-sharing model), BentoBox (flexible vault infrastructure), and SushiXSwap (bridgeless cross-chain). Today it runs on 40+ blockchains with $251B+ in cumulative volume — a genuine piece of DeFi history still actively operating.

Guide

How to Use What is SushiSwap

Step-by-step from first swap to xSUSHI staking and cross-chain trading.

01

Understand the Origin

SushiSwap forked Uniswap in August 2020 and added SUSHI token rewards to LPs. Within days it had attracted $1B+ from Uniswap pools — one of DeFi\'s most dramatic liquidity migrations.

02

Understand xSUSHI

When you stake SUSHI, you receive xSUSHI. A 0.05% fee from every swap on every chain SushiSwap operates on flows into the xSUSHI pool, increasing its value relative to SUSHI.

03

Understand the Multichain Model

SushiSwap deploys on new chains to capture liquidity early. The 40+ chain coverage gives it presence on many chains where other major DEXes are absent.

04

Understand SushiXSwap

Cross-chain swaps work by routing through an intermediary token and using cross-chain messaging — no separate bridge app needed, reducing complexity and attack surface.

05

Access at sushi

FAQ

Questions About What is SushiSwap

What was the SushiSwap vampire attack?
+
In August 2020, SushiSwap offered SUSHI token rewards to anyone who deposited Uniswap LP tokens. When it launched its own pools, users migrated over $1 billion of liquidity from Uniswap to SushiSwap in one of DeFi\'s most dramatic liquidity shifts. This became known as a "vampire attack."
What is the difference between SUSHI and xSUSHI?
+
SUSHI is the governance token. xSUSHI is the staking receipt token you receive when you lock SUSHI. xSUSHI\'s value relative to SUSHI increases over time as 0.05% of all SushiSwap fees across all chains accumulate in the staking pool.
Is SushiSwap open-source?
+
Yes. SushiSwap\'s smart contracts are open-source, audited, and publicly available. The original vampire fork was itself possible because Uniswap\'s code was open-source.
What is BentoBox?
+
BentoBox is SushiSwap\'s capital-efficient vault system. Tokens deposited into BentoBox can be lent out or used in strategies even while serving as LP liquidity — improving overall capital efficiency for depositors.
Where is SushiSwap\'s official website?
+
SushiSwap\'s official interface is at sushi.com. Always verify the URL — phishing sites targeting DeFi users are common. The previous URL app.sushi.com redirects to sushi.com.

What Traders Say

DeFi Historian
★★★★★

"SushiSwap\'s history is one of the most interesting in DeFi. The vampire attack, the anonymous founder Chef Nomi controversy, the community takeover, xSUSHI — every major DeFi governance innovation was stress-tested through Sushi."

Protocol Researcher
★★★★☆

"The xSUSHI model is underappreciated as a template. It was the first time a DeFi protocol successfully shared revenue directly with token holders at scale. Dozens of protocols have since copied the model."

Curious User
★★★★★

"Never knew Sushi had such a wild origin story. The vampire attack explanation makes it click — and it helps understand why xSUSHI exists as a loyalty mechanism to keep the community engaged after the initial excitement."
